Quality

Customer satisfaction is at the core of all MCL activities. This is achieved through continual improvement of process performance, which, in turn, enhances quality of the end product.

Further, the Company strives to add value at every operation to achieve quality conforming to global standards.

The Quality Assurance laboratories are equipped with modern testing facilities operated by well trained staff. The result is consistent and high quality of products.

Environment Protection

Environment protection is a core value at MCL. The Company makes constant efforts to minimize the impact of its operations on the environment, at all stages. This includes procurement of a surface miner which does away with the need for blasting during mining operations and use of specific technologies (i.e. CFBC Boiler, ESP, etc.) to minimise emissions of the thermal power plant. Most recently, the environment regulator ZEMA has accorded approval for the company’s procedures for furnace ash disposal including management of dump sites and reforestation.

MCL continues to improve its environmental management through energy conservation, reduction of waste and greater recycling, thereby reducing the carbon footprint. Energy consumption is closely monitored through introduction of more energy efficient machinery, installation of light sensors, setting temperature control devices, etc., thus maintaining high energy efficiency.

The Company undertakes training and education initiatives to promote environmental awareness among all its employees and closely interacts with the community including school going children to raise awareness of the importance of conserving the environment. At the heart of this inclusive approach, is MCL’s ‘Green Maamba’ campaign which envisages restoring green cover by tree plantation drives, both in operational areas as well as in the township.

As a responsible corporate citizen, the Company makes constant efforts to build and nurture long standing relationships with various members of the society in general and the local communities in which it operates.

The Maamba Private Basic School, run by MCL, provides quality education to about 900 students from various peripheral villages, from Grade I to Grade IX. In keeping with the aim of becoming one of the best schools in the region, the Management inaugurated a modern science laboratory and is constantly working at upgrading the IT facilities and availability of books in the library. Apart from this, the company periodically supports other schools in the township and provides material assistance when required.

MCL has always been at the forefront of helping improve health facilities in the district by providing material support to and assisting in infrastructure development at Maamba General Hospital as well conducting periodic outreach health camps for people staying in remote and inaccessible areas. Soon after privatisation, the company’s sponsors Nava Ltd. (formerly Nava Bharat Ventures Ltd.), India donated US$ 500, 000 for helping with construction of the Eye Clinic at UTH, Lusaka. The company is partnership with the Ministry of Health and Operation Eyesight Universal in October 2022, set up a state-of-art Eye Care Centre inaugurated by the Vice President of the Republic of Zambia. The clinic will greatly help the needy of the district and the Southern Province. The company has also recently built a Clinic in remote Lake Kariba to easy access of the people living in inaccessible locations to medical care and facilities.

MCL is continuously engaged in developing, maintaining and augmenting infrastructure. The flagship infrastructure development project fully funded and executed by the company was the reconstruction of Maamba Township roads completed in Sep 2020. Apart from that, MCL is helping the community by building foot bridges and dams on request from different segments of the community, especially in remote areas.

MCL sponsors a football team Maamba Energy Stars, whose continued good performances has seen the team being promoted to the First Division of the National League run by the Football Association of Zambia. The home stadium is regularly made available to District Education Board for use for sporting events for schools in the district. The company also runs golf and racquet clubs for tennis, squash and badminton to provide opportunities for sports and use by all members of the community.

The company is actively involved in community events such as Women’s Day, Labour Day, Environment Day and other traditional and cultural events etc., as well as normally being the first responder in providing assistance in event of natural calamities and other disasters.

MCL runs a Technical Training School at Maamba. This facility, accredited to Technical Education, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training Authority (TEVETA) of Zambia, provides vocational training and skill development for local youth to improve their employability in trades like welding, electrician training and is considering starting courses in plumbing and

MCL also runs Livelihood Restoration Programme in partnership with the Catholic church and conducts classes in tailoring for women and carpentry in joinery for men from less privileged sections of the community, giving them the opportunity to become financially independent.

The company has taken a lead role in the fight against the COVID 19 pandemic. Its many interventions include donation of a ventilator to the Ministry of Health for the Maamba General Hospital, assisting the Sinazongwe District Health authorities in setting up the COVID management centre, conduct of COVID 19 vaccination drives for the company staff members as providers of essential services for the public and disseminating information and increasing awareness amongst the community and schools about precautions and guidelines necessary to be adopted.
